We treat high blood pressure frequently with Hijama at the LCC. High blood pressure has been proven to contribute to heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, kidney disease and eye disease. Scientific studies clearly demonstrate that having a healthy blood pressure is of great benefit.
In the UK the vast majority of patients that suffer with high blood pressure are managed by their GPs. Anti-hypertensive medications are amongst the most commonly prescribed drugs that exist in the world. While successful in reducing blood pressure, all pills come at a cost. Side effects such as tiredness, nausea, headaches, constipation, swelling of ankles, dry coughs, worsening of kidney function and light-headedness are all commonly experienced by patients. Often the medicines cause more symptoms than the high blood pressure ever was.
Blood pressure increases in the arteries of the body through three ways;
1) The blood itself becomes thicker and heavier over a period of time.
2) The volume of blood increases in the circulation.
3) The blood vessels become 'stiffer' and less elastic due to age and the build up of cholesterol in the walls of the arteries.
The scientific basis for why Hijama works in treating high blood pressure is simple and relates the 'thickness' of the blood flowing through the circulation. Through wet cupping therapy, the heaviest and oldest 'stagnant' blood is selectively removed. As a result the circulation is left lighter and cleaner and the blood pressure reduced.
Speaking to our patients and medical professionals it is clear that patients don't like taking medications. The side effects are common and often people hate taking pills every day. At the London Cupping Clinic the aim of our treatment and how we measure our success is achieving control of your blood pressure and reducing your need for medication.
Clearly each patient is different but as a rough guide, our treatment for high blood pressure aims to demonstrate improvement by three months. An example treatment plan would be a full consultation followed by two treatment sessions with four weeks between sessions. At this point you would not need Hijama more often then every 3-4 months.
In early 2016 the LCC will be initiating our 'hypertension club' package. The package will involve three treatment sessions. All patients will be participate in our clinical trial measuring the effect of wet cupping therapy on hypertension.
